PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Mirer to Start in Opener for Seahawks

August 23, 1993|Associated Press

Because of an injury to Dan McGwire, rookie Rick Mirer will be the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback when they open their season against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 5 at San Diego. McGwire suffered a chipped bone in his right wrist during a 30-0 exhibition victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night. . . . Offensive tackle Anthony Munoz of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, forced out of the NFL by nagging injuries last season, retired again when tests revealed he has a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

The Cincinnati Bengals released kicker Jim Breech, a 13-year veteran who is 11th on the all-time NFL scoring list with 1,158 points. . . . Reggie Brooks scored on a four-yard run early in the fourth quarter giving the Washington Redskins a 10-3 exhibition victory over the Pittsbugh Steelers at Pittsburgh.
