Orloff Assumes Santa Ana Valley Coaching Duties

August 26, 1993

Scott Orloff, an assistant football coach at Century High, has been named coach at Santa Ana Valley High, Principal Bob Nelson announced Tuesday.

Orloff, 29, replaces Scott Strosnider, who resigned in July. Santa Ana Valley was 3-6-1, 1-3-1 in league play last year.

Orloff, Century's defensive coordinator the past two years, joins two other former Centurion assistants as rookie head coaches this season: La Habra's Rick Milhizer and El Modena's Steve Howard.

Orloff began his coaching career as an assistant at Sonora, just after graduating from El Dorado High in 1982. He returned to El Dorado the next season, where he spent five years as an assistant.

He was an assistant at Laguna Hills from 1988-90, then joined the Century staff in 1991.

Orloff graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He earned his teaching certificate in 1988.

A former English teacher at Century, Orloff will teach physical education at Santa Ana Valley this fall.

Karyn Rice, who coached Mater Dei's softball team to a 19-5 record last season, has resigned.

Rice is leaving to accept a position as assistant softball coach at Colorado State. She was formerly an assistant at Cal State Long Beach.

Applicants interested in filling the coaching vacancy should contact girls' Athletic Director Patti Smith at 754-7711.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shot one-under 71 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club to move into a second-place tie in the Maxfli PGA Junior Championship at North Carolina.

Booth has a two-round total of 145 and is tied with Ann Pohira of Winter Park, Fla., five strokes behind leader Erika Hayashida of Lima, Peru. Hayashida, who shot 69 Wednesday, lost to Booth in the final of the USGA Girls' Junior Championship early this month.

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana shot 75 and is eight strokes behind Hayashida in ninth place.
