MOVIES TO TAPE

August 29, 1993|Kevin Thomas

Ride in the Whirlwind (TBS Monday at 6:50 p.m.) is a striking 1966 Monte Hellman Western, starring Cameron Mitchell and co-starring Jack Nicholson (who also wrote the script). The story is about three cowboys in flight, having been mistaken for outlaws.

The Border (USA Monday at 9 p.m.) also stars Nicholson. This unjustly neglected 1982 film has him playing a border patrolman increasingly disaffected with his job of forcing Mexicans back to their side of the Rio Grande.

La Notte (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m. and Friday at midnight) is a key 1961 Michelangelo Antonioni film starring Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau as a disaffected couple.

Working Girls (Cinemax Friday at 8 p.m.), Lizzie Borden's wryly fine and fictional 1987 release, takes us inside a bustling, expensive Manhattan bordello.
