LOS ANGELES : Zoo to Move Elephant to Riverside County

September 01, 1993

A year after Hannibal the elephant died during a transfer from the Los Angeles Zoo, officials will announce today that they plan to move Billy, a 10-year-old Asian bull elephant, to a private stable in Riverside County.

Zoo officials were criticized last year for their decision to tranquilize Hannibal before he was loaded into a trailer bound for Mexico. He collapsed and died, prompting storms of protest.

Billy is considered the most aggressive of the zoo's seven elephants. He is being relocated for one year to a facility in Perris while the zoo's elephant barn is being renovated. Officials said he will not be tranquilized for the move, scheduled for later this month.
