Glendale : Alex Theatre Gets $330,000

September 02, 1993

An additional $330,000 to renovate the historic Alex Theatre for semiprofessional productions was approved Tuesday by the Glendale City Redevelopment Agency.

The city-owned theater, which is seven months into renovation and is slated to open New Year's Eve, needs additional sound and lighting equipment to stage a series of musicals, according to Theatre Corporations of America, the operator.

The redevelopment agency in December provided $6.2 million for the renovation project and awarded the construction contract to Los Angeles-based Turner Construction. The 68-year-old theater needed more money than expected to meet Fire Department and building code requirements, city officials said.

The Alex Regional Theatre Board has agreed to pay back within five years half of the $330,000 authorized. The board is a nonprofit agency that oversees the 1,460-seat theater's administration.

The theater's operator has sold more than 3,000 subscriptions so far and expects to have 15,000 total by January, city officials said.
