FOOTBALL '93 : The High Schools: City / Southern Section : FRONTIER LEAGUE

September 02, 1993

Calabasas

1992: Lost in first round of playoffs

OVERALL: 7-4

LEAGUE: 3-1

PLACE: 2nd

COACH: Larry Edwards

YEAR: 14th

RECORD AT SCHOOL: 58-71-4

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Jason Rampel, 6-5, 250 OT DT Sr. Joey Gagliardi, 6-4, 270 OT DT Sr. Ziad Bawarshi, 5-10, 170 QB CB Sr. Matt Findlay, 6-0, 180 TB LB Sr. Steve Weiser, 6-0, 225 -- DE Sr. Terry Ng, 6-1, 195 FB LB Sr. James Lin, 5-10, 165 TE LB Sr. Marty Lyons, 6-0, 230 -- DT Sr. Jesse Zamudio, 6-1, 240 OG -- Sr. David Wymer, 5-9, 150 WR FS Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Jovaughn Johnson, 6-0, 230 OG -- Jr. Steve Wang, 5-9, 185 -- LB Jr.

FAST FACT

In 1990, Calabasas had only 14 players and the program hit bottom. Since then, the Coyotes are 13-8.

OUTLOOK

To mess with the Coyotes' plans for a league championship might be a risky proposal. Four blockers who average 248 pounds will front the power-I offense. Said Edwards: "If we can't control the line of scrimmage, we'll be playing the Packers or the Rams that day." If that's not enough to strike fear, Edwards has considered handing the ball off to the 6-5, 250-pound Rampel, a returning all-section player who runs a 4.7 40. Coyotes have good athletes but can't afford many mistakes or injuries.

Moorpark

1992: Did not make playoffs

OVERALL: 2-8

LEAGUE: 1-3

PLACE: 4th

COACH: Rob Dearborn

YEAR: 6th

RECORD AT SCHOOL: 15-34

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Dan Arnold, 5-10, 205 OT DT Sr. Bill Finnerty, 6-2, 190 TE LB Sr. Javier Solano, 6-1, 200 OT LB Sr. Curtis Silverest, 6-1, 205 FB LB Sr. Art Hoffman, 6-0, 160 WR CB Sr. Jared Kira, 5-9, 155 WR FS Sr. Jose Seja, 6-0, 180 RB SS Jr. Jose Castro, 6-0, 190 -- DT Sr. Chris Stead, 6-0, 185 C LB Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Tyler Dritz, 6-0, 165 QB CB Jr. Brian Paul, 6-3, 170 QB FS So. David Burns, 6-3, 170 WR -- So.

FAST FACT

Moorpark, a school built in 1909, has not won a league championship since 1943 and has never won a playoff game.

OUTLOOK

The past five years have taken their toll on Dearborn, 29, who says he feels more like 45. This could be his pivotal season in football-crazy, victory-starved Moorpark. Fifteen starters are back, including five skill players and three linemen on offense. Good news for a team that lost some close games because it could not score on key drives. Returning all-league linebackers Finnerty and Solano will anchor an experienced defense. Said Dearborn: "We've got to get out of the rut we're in. We've got to break the cycle."

Nordhoff

1992: Lost in Division IX semfinals

OVERALL: 11-2

LEAGUE: 4-0

PLACE: 1st

COACH: Cliff Ferrar

YEAR: 7th

RECORD AT SCHOOL: 24-30

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR James Colborn, 5-11, 175 F FS Jr. Ben Churchill, 6-1, 195 TE LB Sr. Blake Coleman, 6-0, 150 QB CB Sr. Sean Leach, 5-7, 140 K P Sr. Archie Jackson, 6-1, 165 WR FS Sr. Josh Hawkins, 6-0, 180 RB CB Jr. Dallan Rigby, 5-10, 175 RB LB Jr. Jestin Knupp, 6-1, 185 OT DT Jr. Jason Anderson, 5-11, 175 C LB Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Sean McBride, 6-1, 210 OL LB Sr. Richard Rojelio, 5-10, 210 OL DL Sr. Cody Burge, 5-9, 215 OL DL Jr. Dave Colker, 6-1, 215 OL DL Jr. Neil Hansen, 6-1, 190 OL LB Jr.

FAST FACT

The Rangers were 6-24 under Ferrar from 1988-90 but are 18-6 under him the past two seasons, with consecutive titles.

OUTLOOK

Coaches are divided between Nordhoff and Calabasas as the favorite, but the Rangers should be the No. 1 target after averaging 40-plus points a game in league play. Back are nine starters and three players--Colborn, Jackson and Hawkins--who were part of a school-record relay team in track last spring. New quarterback Coleman comes from good stock--his father, Jim, played at UCLA. The offensive line is bolstered by four newcomers who weigh 210 or more, but it is unproven. Hawkins, Colborn and linebacker Churchill are three-year starters.

Santa Clara

1992: Did not make playoffs

OVERALL: 2-8

LEAGUE: 0-4

PLACE: 5th

COACH: Tom O'Brien

YEAR: 3rd

RECORD AT SCHOOL: 5-15

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Albert Carranza, 5-11, 175 QB LB Sr. Paul Soliz, 5-6, 155 FB CB Sr. Billy Luhrs, 5-5, 140 HB CB Sr. Greg Cerra, 5-10, 175 WR FS Sr. Nathan Donnelly, 5-9, 155 WR -- Sr. Joe Angeles, 5-10, 300 OT -- Sr. Dan Uelmen, 5-6, 220 OG DL Sr. Jeremy Kwolek, 5-9, 195 C LB Sr. Mike Cabana, 5-6, 215 OG DL Sr. Greg Barnes, 5-10, 190 -- LB Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Juan Hernandez, 5-7, 135 QB CB Jr. Edward Escudero, 5-11, 190 OT DT Jr. Frank Coronel, 5-9, 145 WR SS Jr.

FAST FACT

Santa Clara has 20 returning starters. Fifteen of them played both offense and defense.

OUTLOOK

When the opposition screams, "Where's the ballcarrier?" O'Brien hopes he can say, "In the end zone." He hopes running backs Foliz (5-6) and Luhrs (5-5) can lose themselves in the large interior lines of Calabasas and Nordhoff--as if in a forest. O'Brien, switching to the deceptive Delaware Wing T to match his diminutive personnel, hopes his backs look like tiny dots from the grandstands, darting left, squirting right, leading the Spirits to the playoffs. Concern: The offensive line also has two 5-6 players.

Santa Paula

1992: Lost in first round of playoffs

OVERALL: 3-7

LEAGUE: 2-2

PLACE: 3rd

COACH: Paul Spinner

YEAR: 1st

RECORD AT SCHOOL: 0-0

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Jeff Shea, 6-2, 180 QB DB Sr. Doug Lemons, 6-1, 210 OT DT Sr. Joseph Jauregui, 5-10, 160 WR PK Sr. Ralph Reyes, 5-11, 170 RB DB Sr. Peter Christensen, 5-11, 175 TE LB Jr. Sam Dominguez, 5-11, 160 C -- Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Abel Jimenez, 6-1, 175 OT LB Jr. Corey Corona, 5-10, 160 WR DB Jr. Joe Russell, 6-1, 210 OT DT Jr.

FAST FACT

Cards averaged 24 points in 1990, 18.2 in '91 and 10.6 last season.

OUTLOOK

Santa Paula was 2-0 in league play when it was devastated in a 14-13 nonleague loss to rival Fillmore. Spinner is trying to rebuild morale by bringing back popular coaches Gil Wright and Henry Jacinto to the staff. But with only three returning starters and Royal and Simi Valley on tap for two of the first three weeks, Cards will need magic.
