CAMARILLO : Driver Injures Arm and Leg as Bus Overturns

September 04, 1993|BRENDA DAY

An Oxnard woman suffered a broken arm and leg Friday morning when the empty school bus she was driving overturned north of Camarillo, pinning her in the vehicle for more than an hour, police said.

Shirley Peachey, 50, was driving the undersized Laidlaw bus from Oxnard to Simi Valley, practicing for a new route, when the accident occurred at 11:05 a.m., said Officer Paul Thompson of the California Highway Patrol.

Peachey was going eastbound on California 118 east of Aggen Road when she drifted onto the right shoulder and hit a power pole, police said. The bus rolled onto its side before hitting another pole, police said.

Peachey was pinned behind the steering wheel of the bus, Thompson said. A Ventura County sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene and administered first aid, and a passerby helped put out an engine fire, Thompson said.

"This wasn't a good day for her, but it could have been worse," Thompson said.

The accident was under investigation Friday afternoon, police said. Peachey was listed in stable condition at Pleasant Valley Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
