Forgettable Opening of New Robinson Era Short on Celebrations

September 04, 1993

Put a hold on those tickets for the 1994 Rose Bowl game! The well-oiled Trojan machine is still showing some rust.

MIKE BERGDAHL, Pasadena

John Robinson has the Trojans, the Rose Bowl-bound Trojans, looking like a well-drilled pro team. Kind of like the '91 Rams.

MICHAEL HANNIN, Woodland Hills

"The spirit is back," blah, blah, blah.

"Student Body Left," blah, blah, blah.

"Student Body Right," blah, blah, blah.

"We made mistakes," blah, blah, blah.

"We still have high expectations," blah, blah, blah.

"Didn't pay enough attention in practice," blah, blah, blah.

"Mr. Garrett, we don't have a Ricky Bell or a Marcus Allen," blah, blah, blah.

Ha, ha, ha.

ROB GRISANTI, A Ram Fan, San Gabriel

Judging from USC's game against North Carolina, it appears that Coach John Robinson has faithfully followed Larry Smith's famous formula for success: If it doesn't work, don't fix it.

ERNIE KREILING, Indian Wells

John Robinson says he's going to the Rose Bowl game. He probably will, as Stanford's guest.

JOSEPH L. DuPLAIN, Glendale

As James Worthy said, USC Band, stop playing that song. When you are getting blown out, you sound really stupid celebrating every five-yard run. At 31-3, it is not a tribute to Troy, it's a dirge.
