SOUTH : Optimist Club Plans Essay, Speech Contest

September 05, 1993

The 5-4 Optimist Club of Greater Los Angeles is sponsoring an essay and oratory contest for area youths.

The essay contest is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The essay must focus on the topic "The Boundaries of Freedom," or the limitations that exist along with freedom.

Entries can be submitted through Oct. 1, and the winner will go on to the Optimist International district competition. The first-place district winner will receive an expense-paid trip to the Freedom and Leadership conference in Valley Forge, Pa., next July.

Contestants in the oratory contest must be under 16 and must speak between four and five minutes on optimism. For example, the topic could be how optimism is linked to success. The winner will be eligible for competition in the district contest, where the top prize is a $1,500 scholarship. The oratory competition is scheduled for Nov. 27.
