Bell Eagles

COACH: Ray Galarze, seventh year.

1992 RECORD: 9-0 in conference; 10-2 overall.

PREDICTION: Last season was one of triumph and turmoil for Bell. The Eagles were riding the crest of a nine-game winning streak and seemingly headed toward the 3-A Division crown when five starters were suspended for rules violations. Linebackers Joel Lopez and Alain Toca will anchor a strong Bell defense. Bell seeks its fifth league title in seven years.

PREDICTION: Fremont hopes to turn its record around and finish among the top four teams in the 3-A division. William Yates is one of the best quarterbacks in the City Section, having thrown for 1,418 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Garfield Bulldogs

PREDICTION: Aguirre inherits a team that went to the City Section 4-A semifinals. The Bulldogs return running back Armando Figueroa, who led the area in rushing with 1,613 yards, and the rest of its top starters, including quarterback David Villalobos, wide receiver Braulio De La Torre, linebacker Manuel Rodriguez and all-purpose player Jesse Villalobos.

PREDICTION: Huntington Park's strength will be its defense. Among the top defensive returnees are linebacker Pedro Esparza, safety-quarterback Deon Mayes and defensive tackle George Figueroa, all three of whom were All-League selections last year.

1992 RECORD: 7-3 in conference; 7-4-1 overall.

PREDICTION: Jefferson is powered by a defense that had 22 interceptions, recovered 12 fumbles and surrendered an average of only nine points a game last season. The Democrats return 10 starters, including all-leaguers John Johnson, Eboni Wilson and Isaac Hatley. Hatley rushed for 895 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a sophomore.
