U.S. Active Duty Roster Down 133,600 in Year

September 05, 1993| Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon says that the number of men and women on active duty fell to 1,717,664 in July, a decline of 133,600 from a year earlier.

The decline, announced Friday, reflects a continuing shrinkage of the military since the end of the Cold War. The Clinton Administration last week reaffirmed that it intends to cut the active-duty military to about 1.4 million by the end of 1999.

As recently as 1991, at the end of the Persian Gulf War, there were slightly more than 2 million people in uniform.
