Forest Service Intern Shot by Assailant in San Gabriel Mountains

September 06, 1993

A U.S. Forest Service intern was shot by an assailant while on patrol in the San Gabriel Mountains, officials said Sunday.

Raymon Torres, 22, who teaches fire prevention, heard gunshots coming from a wooded area near a stream by the Mt. Baldy ranger district Saturday afternoon. When he got out of his truck to investigate, he was shot in the right side of his back, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said.

Torres did not see the person who shot him. Sheriff's deputies said no arrests had been made by Sunday.

Although target shooting is permitted in some areas of the mountains, guns are not permitted in the area where Torres was shot, a Forest Service official said.

Torres was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, where he had a bullet removed during surgery and was released.
