VENTURA COUNTY NEWSWATCH

September 07, 1993|Gary Gorman

BABY FACTORY: As the county's primary medical providers to the poor, nurses and doctors at Ventura County Medical Center routinely treat victims of horrific accidents and intractable diseases. So perhaps it's some consolation that they also get to witness more births than any other Ventura County hospital. . . . Babies are born at the Ventura hospital at least 10 times a day. With Community Memorial down the street in second place, more than 60% of the county's babies are born in a three-block stretch of Loma Vista Avenue. . . . What do they wear when they get home? Increasingly, parents are pampering their newborns with cloth diapers (B1).

MARCOS RETURNS: Among the more than 13,000 Filipino-Americans in Ventura County, the topic at Labor Day barbecues was the return of deposed President Ferdinand Marcos' body to the Philippines (A4). . . . "Most of us feel it is time," said Tony Grey of the Filipino-American Council of Ventura County. "Whatever he has done, he is part of our history and deserves to be buried in the Philippines."

LATINO ADVANCES: Latinos make up more than 26% of Ventura County's population--but only about 11% of Sheriff's Department personnel. . . . So the appointment of Richard Rodriguez to chief deputy last month has been hailed as an important symbol of progress (B1). . . . During 26 years with the agency, Rodriguez served as police chief in Moorpark, where he was credited with easing tensions between deputies and Latinos.

HUDSON'S MOVING: Ventura is losing the corporate headquarters of the Hudson's Grill restaurant chain, which has 120 employees in Ventura County (Valley Business, Page 12). A Texas entrepreneur has acquired control of the chain and plans to move its offices to Dallas. . . . The company reported a loss of $671,000 this year and defaulted on a loan. . . . The company has four Hudson's Grill outlets in the county and operates Hornblower's at Ventura Harbor.
