LOS ANGELES : New Law Mandates More Public Toilets for Women

September 09, 1993

The builders of new auditoriums, theaters and convention halls will have to provide women with twice the number of toilets they provide for men, under an amendment to the Plumbing Code approved Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

Councilman Hal Bernson made the proposal to increase the number of toilets for women at large public facilities after his wife, Robyn, complained about long lines at many events.

The city code previously required construction of about 65% more women's toilets than men's toilets in public facilities that hold more than 1,200 occupants. Under the old law, for example, a 20,000-seat arena would be required to have 90 toilets for women and 55 for men, including urinals. Under the new law, 110 toilets must be provided for women, compared to 55 for men.
