VENTURA COUNTY NEWSWATCH

September 09, 1993|Gary Gorman

HALLOWHAT? Here's a spooky thought: Halloween is less than two months away, and serious masqueraders are already assembling costumes. "Every year they come in earlier," said Bonnie Mihalic of Bonnie's costume shop in Ventura. . . . Hot costumes this year? Pirate garb is moving, as well as Aladdin and Jasmine outfits. For kids, there's still a niche for Ninjas. And if you think Barney the dinosaur is overexposed, wait till those purple-clad trick-or-treaters start arriving. . . . Sylvia's Costumes in Camarillo has Clinton and Perot masks, but owner Sylvia Vigni expects a run on Conehead gear.

LEGAL AID: In 1990, 76 female employees accused Saticoy Lemon Assn. of sex discrimination and won a $550,000 judgment. Now a similar suit filed by women at Oxnard Lemon Co. has been settled (B1). . . . The Oxnard case is the latest triumph for California Rural Legal Assistance's 4 1/2-year-old Ventura County office, which has fought rent increases at mobile home parks and use of illegal tools in fields. . . . Pending: A sex-bias case against Buenaventura Lemon Co. in Saticoy.

WINGED WONDER: Of all the hand-crafted presidential images on display at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, this one draws the most comments, Assistant Director Kevin Cartwright said. Reason: It's made entirely of butterfly wings. . . . On loan from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library near Simi Valley, the piece was created in 1984 by Central African artist Alphonse Ngouadeke. . . . Because of the response, the Reagan library plans to display it.

PACK RATS: For 40 years, Jim and Ida Brucker loaded up at garage sales and studio property auctions--collecting enough to fill an 80,000-square-foot warehouse in Santa Paula. . . . On Sept. 24, the $1-million collection goes on the auction block (E1). . . . Among the buyers will be Santa Paula art gallery owner John Nichols. "It's a huge warehouse filled with groovy stuff." The stash includes urns from "The Wizard of Oz" and the Flying Nun's motor scooter.
