India to Set Aside Half of Federal Jobs for Underprivileged

September 09, 1993| Associated Press

NEW DELHI — Half of all federal jobs will be set aside for India's underprivileged, the government decreed Wednesday.

A similar proposal three years ago to reserve more jobs for low-caste Hindus and other underprivileged groups was buried after weeks of rioting, mostly by high-caste students who feared their futures would be jeopardized. Nearly 100 young people committed suicide in protest or despair, and 68 people were killed in violent demonstrations.
