LOS ANGELES : Williams Pledges to Make DARE a High Priority

September 11, 1993

Police Chief Willie L. Williams pledged Friday to give a popular drug-education program high priority as the Los Angeles Police Department lays plans to hire more officers.

But the chief also said he could not promise that the program--DARE, for Drug Abuse Resistance Education--will return to the strength it enjoyed a few years ago. Under the program, pioneered by the LAPD and the Los Angeles Unified School District, police officers teach children about drugs and try to build their self-esteem to help them resist peer pressure to use drugs.

"DARE's not going to go away," Williams said. "I support the program, and I believe strongly in it."
