REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Late Field Goal Gives BYU a 41-38 Victory

It took Brigham Young's John Walsh only 19 seconds to turn 65,771 booing fans into his best friends.

The sophomore quarterback, who had received the crowd's wrath by repeatedly overthrowing receivers, earned cheers with a 58-yard pass play to Eric Drage with 37 seconds left.

The play set up Joe Herrick's 40-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining, giving No. 20 BYU a 41-38 Western Athletic Conference victory over Hawaii at Provo, Utah.

Hawaii (1-1 overall, 0-1 in the WAC) lost its chance to take the lead when a 21-yard field-goal attempt by Carlton Oswalt bounced off the left upright with 41 seconds left.

"We didn't put the ball in the end zone when we had the chance," Hawaii Coach Bob Wagner said. "We shouldn't have been in that position."

Walsh completed 18 of 36 passes with two touchdowns for BYU (2-0 overall and in the WAC).


Wyoming wide receiver Ryan Yarborough became the 14th player in NCAA history to compile 3,000 receiving yards during the Cowboys' 45-42 victory over Northern Iowa (0-2) at Laramie, Wyo. . . . Fullback Leonice Brown ran three yards for the game's only touchdown as Colorado State (1-1, 1-0) defeated Air Force (1-1, 0-1), 8-5, at Fort Collins, Colo.


Tommy Edwards scored four touchdowns and Dwayne Thomas ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia Tech (2-0) ruined Johnny Majors' homecoming at Pitt (1-1) with a 63-21 victory . . . Akili King rushed for 235 yards as Army (1-0) defeated Colgate (0-2), 30-0, at West Point, N.Y. . . . John Benestad kicked a 38-yard field goal with 1:01 remaining to lift Rutgers (1-0) to a 39-38 victory over Duke (0-2) at East Rutherford, N.J. . . .


Ryan Henry completed two touchdown passes to Rameir Martin as Bowling Green (1-1) beat Cincinnati (1-1), 21-7, at Bowling Green, Ohio. . . . Junior flanker Jeremy Patterson caught three touchdown passes as Miami, Ohio (1-0) defeated Southwestern Louisiana (0-2), 29-28, at Oxford, Ohio.


Flanker Aaron Bailey scored three touchdowns to lead Louisville (2-0) to a 54-28 victory over Memphis State (1-1) at Memphis, Tenn.


Tailback Andre Davis' fourth touchdown, and the 2-point conversion, gave Texas Christian (1-1) a 35-34 victory over New Mexico (0-2) at Fort Worth, Tex. . . . Gus Frerotte passed for three touchdowns, leading Tulsa (1-1) to a 38-24 victory over Houston at Houston (0-2) . . . Yoncy Edmonds ran for two touchdowns as Rice (1-1) defeated Tulane (0-2), 34-0, at Houston . . . Fullback Kaio Aumua scored the go-ahead touchdown with 4:35 left to lead Texas El Paso (1-1) past Nevada Las Vegas (1-1), 41-24, at El Paso, Tex. . . . Joe Garofalo threw three touchdown passes to Eric Harrington as Cal State Sacramento (2-0) defeated San Francisco State (0-2), 49-10 at San Francisco.


Arbra Bailey passed for 188 yards and one touchdown and in leading Trinity (1-0) to a 24-3 victory over Claremont-Mudd (0-1) at San Antonio . . . A 38-yard punt return with 9:29 to play by Pete Marine led Cal Lutheran over Azusa Pacific, 10-9 . . .
