BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Butler, Wallach Shave Off Beards

September 12, 1993|MARYANN HUDSON

Brett Butler and Tim Wallach, who said they would grow mustaches and goatees until Dave Hansen broke the club's pinch-hit record, shaved them off before Hansen tied the record with his 17th pinch-hit on Monday.

"I shaved mine because Butler shaved his," Wallach said. "I'll let him tell you why."

Said Butler: "My kid said it made me look like I was 50 years old. And my wife said it prickled. And we know who the boss is in the family."

Hansen is batting .354 (17 for 48) as a pinch-hitter, with two home runs and 16 runs batted in, including a ninth-inning grand slam against the San Francisco Giants.

Darren Dreifort, the Dodgers' top draft pick, will report today to the Fall Instructional League in Arizona. Dreifort, who was a closer for Wichita State, says the Dodgers have mentioned the possibility of turning him into a starter, depending on the club's needs. After Arizona, Dreifort said he will either return to Dodger Stadium in January, when winter workouts begin, or train at Wichita State.

"Several major leaguers come home and work out at Wichita State in the winter," Dreifort said. "Pat Meares (Minnesota Twins) and Mike Lansing (Montreal Expos) are a couple of them, and it's a good workout." Dreifort will be in major league camp in spring training with a chance to make the club.

Right-hander John DeSilva has yet to throw a pitch for the Dodgers since arriving in the trade that sent Eric Davis to the Detroit Tigers, but Mike Piazza knows what kind of pitcher he is. "When I heard about the trade, I was hoping the player to be named was him," said Piazza, who played with DeSilva in the Fall Instructional League. "He has a good breaking ball."
