Alhambra : Graffiti Ordinance Studied

September 16, 1993

The City Council on Monday gave tentative approval to a graffiti law that would slap a $500 fine on property owners who fail to clean up the vandalism within 10 days.

The proposed ordinance would also fine parents up to $10,000 if their children damage property with graffiti, provide $200 rewards for tips leading to convictions of taggers, and require businesses selling aerosol spray and felt-tip markers to post signs warning their improper use may be a crime.

In other business, council members gave a first reading to an ordinance requiring stores to obtain permits to hold close-out sales. The permit would limit the sale to 30 days.

Both ordinances are expected to get final approval Sept. 27.
