COLLEGE ROUNDUP : 2 Quick Scores by West Propel CSUN in Soccer

September 18, 1993

Keith West scored two goals for the second match in a row to lead the Cal State Northridge men's soccer team to a 5-3 nonconference victory over host Cal State Sacramento on Friday.

West, a junior transfer from Glendale College who did not score in the Matadors' first four matches, gave CSUN (4-2) a 2-0 lead in the first half when he scored two goals in 30 seconds.

His first goal came from 15 yards at the 14-minute mark and his second came from 10 yards.

"We told him earlier in the week to not think about scoring goals," Northridge Coach Marwan Ass'ad said. "We told him to just think about playing a team game and the goals would come. And they have."

Goals by Armando Valdivia--his seventh of the season--and Teddy Davila gave Northridge a 4-0 lead at halftime, but Sacramento narrowed its deficit to 4-3 in the second half on two goals by Martin Sims and one by John Jones.

Freshman Raja Hawa scored his first goal of the season with nine minutes to play to secure the match for the Matadors.

Notre Dame d. CS Northridge, 15-4, 15-9, 15-10--Aimee Stone had team-high totals of 10 kills and 11 digs, but the Matadors dropped their opening match in the Notre Dame tournament.

The loss was the second in a row for Northridge (4-6), which had a three-match winning streak snapped by San Diego State last Saturday.

Ana Kristich (.263 hitting percentage) and Missy Clements (.667) added eight and seven kills for the Matadors, but Northridge hit poorly (.179) as a team.

Christy Peters led Notre Dame with 14 kills, 13 digs and seven blocks (two solo).

Northridge will conclude the round-robin tournament with matches against New Mexico and William & Mary today.
