AIDS represents the ultimate test of the reformed health care system being proposed by the Clinton Administration, Tipper Gore told an estimated 10,000 people who marched to raise money for a cure. "We will continue to walk until the last mile is reached and the cure for AIDS is found," said the wife of Vice President Al Gore. She opened the capital's 1993 Aids-walk with a pledge that the Administration's new health care system will guarantee "health security" for those suffering from AIDS and those infected by HIV, which causes the disease. Organizers said the event raised more than $1.25 million for AIDS education, research and care.
