DOE and 5 Utilities to Build Large-Scale Fuel Cell: A first-of-its-kind, utility-size fuel cell will be built in Santa Clara, Calif., in a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute--the utility industry's research arm--and five California utilities, including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Southern California Edison and the City of Vernon Light and Power Department. The planned two-megawatt plant, capable of producing daily electricity for 2,000 average California homes, will hold natural gas fuel that will be converted directly to electrical energy without combustion, making it virtually pollution-free.
