RAMS : Rubley Plays Part of Moon in Practice

September 24, 1993

Third-string quarterback T.J. Rubley, who is supposed to be Jim Everett's heir apparent, spent the week playing the role of Houston quarterback Warren Moon in practice.

Rubley gets no game preparation in practice and works with the scout squad running the upcoming opponent's offense. Everett and Mike Pagel get all the snaps with the first offensive unit.

"It's frustrating because you can't progress and continue on and get better," Rubley said. "You try to do as much as you can on the scout team, but we're running Houston's run-and-shoot, so it gives me even more bad habits.

"They have designated places where you have to throw the ball so for somebody standing there watching it's like, 'Gee, you just threw that one into three people.' "

Is Rubley ready to play?

"Mentally, I'm always ready," he said. "Realistically, I just don't feel prepared without practice time. It will take a while to get back in the swing of things.

"It has only been three weeks since the preseason, but that's been three weeks without practice."
