September 26, 1993|From Associated Press

BERKELEY — Lindsey Chapman scored twice to lead a devastating running attack as No. 20 California rolled to a 46-13 nonconference victory over winless San Jose State on Saturday.

Cal (4-0) outgained San Jose State 528 yards to 248. Most of it came on the ground as the Bears rushed for 288 yards against a defense that has given up more than 30 points in each of its losses.

Chapman had touchdown runs of two and nine yards and gained 97 yards in 20 carries. Reynard Rutherford added 96 yards in 10 carries.

Backups Tyrone Edwards and Tarik Smith scored on second-half runs of seven and six yards, respectively.

Cal quarterback Dave Barr was knocked out of the game briefly because of stomach cramps, but he completed 23 of 28 passes for 242 yards and connected with Mike Caldwell on a 22-yard touchdown pass play.

Jeff Garcia, who entered leading the nation in total offense, could get very little goingagainst a smothering Cal defense as San Jose State (0-4) continued its worst start since 1965.

Cal scored on its first five possessions and led 23-7 at halftime despite twice having to settle for field goals after penalties negated apparent touchdowns.

Doug Brien kicked field goals of 19, 21 and 36 yards.
