JOHANNESBURG : Sensitive Murder Trial

September 28, 1993

The high-profile trial of three alleged white supremacists charged with murdering Chris Hani, South Africa's charismatic black Communist Party chief, April 10 is scheduled to start in the Rand Supreme Court here next Monday.

Janusz Waluz, a Polish immigrant with ties to ultra-right paramilitary organizations, is accused of shooting the former guerrilla leader at close range in his driveway. Also charged were Clive Derby Lewis and Gay Derby Lewis, both active in pro-apartheid groups.

Hani's assassination sparked brutal riots across the country as angry mobs torched cars, smashed storefronts and rampaged through shopping districts.
