COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Walsh: Eligibility Should Be at Stake

September 29, 1993|Associated Press

Stanford Coach Bill Walsh has called for strong action to prevent brawls during games.

"My suggestion is that the university president visit with the football team prior to the season and say that if one of these things happens, they're going to be ineligible, period," Walsh said.

After a brawl involving Miami and Colorado, Miami Coach Dennis Erickson announced that he will suspend for one game any player who leaves the bench to join a fight. Colorado Coach Bill McCartney said he would also impose "severe consequences for anyone who leaves the bench area." But neither coach suspended any players involved in last Saturday's fight. McCartney said said none of his players "were flagrantly out of control." Erickson sadid virtually the same thing.
