Japan to Import Rice: Cabinet officials will meet to decide on buying the grain from the United States and Australia to offset this year's crop shortage, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported. The purchases are expected to amount to about 1 million tons of rice, the paper said. Japan is also expected to import rice from Thailand in November. Last year, the Japanese produced about 10.5 million tons of the grain and consumed about 11.5 million tons, according to the Japanese Agriculture Ministry.
