September 30, 1993|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A German driving cross-country was shot at a highway rest area near Grants Pass, Ore., and died after his companions rushed him to a nearby house, authorities said. The man was a German citizen who has lived in Florida for a year. He was driving with two others in a van to visit relatives in Canada, Dist. Atty. Tim Thompson said. His name was not immediately released. Thompson refused to divulge details of the shooting and downplayed any connection to the recent spate of tourist slayings in Florida. "It does not appear to be random and it does not appear to be tourist-related," he said.
