Researcher Sentenced in Fraud Case

A California legal researcher accused in a scheme to free four drug suspects on phony bail bonds has been sentenced in Phoenix to 52 1/2 years in prison without parole.

Anant Kumar Tripati, 39, of Beverly Hills was sentenced Tuesday by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge John Schwartz. He was convicted July 16 of two counts of attempted fraud and one count each of fraud and false swearing.

One of the suspects being held in Maricopa County Jail was freed before law enforcement officers uncovered the 1992 scheme.

Deputy County Atty. Donald Conrad asked for a harsh sentence, noting that Tripati committed the crimes within 10 years of conviction for nine other fraud-related charges.
