OAKHURST, Calif. — Once a cop, always a cop--even as a software designer.

Sierra On-Line said former Los Angeles Police Chief Darryl Gates helped the computer game developer design a game that lets the player "crawl inside the mind of a serial killer."

During Gates' 43 years on the police force, he worked on the Hillside Strangler and Charles Manson cases.

In the game, called Police Quest: Open Season, the player investigates a number of seemingly random murders around Los Angeles and uses real-life police procedures to track down the killer.
