PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : McCallum Making a Rapid Recovery

December 09, 1993|STEVE SPRINGER

Running back Napoleon McCallum, who underwent an appendectomy Nov. 27, is making a rapid recovery, according to Coach Art Shell.

Shell has been insisting that McCallum could be back before the end of the regular season Jan. 2. On Wednesday, Shell moved the date up.

"There's speculation that (he could be back) possibly next week or the week after," Shell said. "He's healing fast, according to what I've heard. He's been working out some and running."

Tim Brown's 183 yards receiving were the fifth highest for a game in club history and the most since Jessie Hester gained 193 in 1986 against Philadelphia. With 54 catches for 838 yards, Brown has reached career highs in both categories. The previous season high for catches by the six-year veteran was 49 last year. His highest previous yardage total was 725 in 1988, his rookie year. . . . The Raiders will stage their annual Toys for Tots event, in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps, at the Coliseum in conjunction with Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Fans are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys. They will be collected by Marine Corps personnel and distributed to needy children in the Los Angeles area.
