News, Tips & Bargains : Jewel House to Close Jan. 10

December 19, 1993

The 30-year-old Jewel House in the Tower of London will be closed Jan. 10 for renovation, and visitors to the Tower will not be able to see the Crown Jewels until the reopening, scheduled around Easter.

The new Jewel House will be three times larger than the existing building and will be able to accommodate 20,000 visitors a day, compared to 5,000 in the existing facility. Tower officials say long lines will be eliminated and access for disabled visitors improved.

Because the jewels will not be on display, Tower admission prices between Jan. 10 and the opening of the new Jewel House will be reduced by about $2.
