The State of Irvine's State of the Art: State of the Art Inc. said Friday it will post a loss for the fourth quarter after charging off about $4 million in software development costs. The maker of accounting software said some of the costs of developing the MacP&L and P&L For Windows programs will be written off because "recent technology and competitive changes in the computer software market" have made the development costs worthless. The company, based in Irvine, didn't say how much it expects to lose; it earned nearly $4 million on revenue of more than $19 million for the first three quarters.
