Workshop to Offer Ideas on Fighting Hunger, Poverty

January 09, 1994

Local anti-hunger groups and Comic Relief will sponsor a conference Friday at USC to help new and experienced activists develop the skills needed to fight hunger and poverty.

The conference, "Soup Lines to the Front Lines," will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the USC Davidson Conference Center, 3415 S. Figueroa St. The conference is free and open to the public.

City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas will deliver the keynote address, "Martin Luther King's Dream and the Nightmare of Homelessness."

Workshops will cover media relations, art and activism on the streets, fighting burnout and getting more homeless people to the polls.

The conference is part of Comic Relief Week, a series of events before Comic Relief VI on Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium, a comedy show hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams that has raised awareness and funds for anti-poverty causes.

Co-sponsors are the Los Angeles Coalition to End Homelessness, the Southern California Interfaith Hunger Coalition, Homeless Health Care Los Angeles and the Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition.

Information: (213) 746-6511.
