January 12, 1994

Quarterback Judd Granzow of Faith Baptist High has been named co-player of the year in the Southern Section's eight-man football large division.

Granzow, a junior who also plays basketball and baseball, led the Contenders to the division final. He shared the award with senior running back Brian Messing of Brentwood, which defeated Faith Baptist in the championship game.

Juniors Andre Menart (defensive line), Colby Carpenter (linebacker) and Rani Zahr (defensive back) also were first-team selections for the Contenders.

In the small schools division, defensive lineman Tom Vondra and running back Jimmy Barnett, seniors at Lancaster Bethel Christian, were first-team selections.

Senior left-hander Randy Wolf of El Camino Real High has been ranked among the nation's best high school prospects by Baseball America magazine.

Wolf, who led the Conquistadores to the City Section 4-A Division championship last spring, is ranked 45th on the national list.

Simi Valley third baseman Ryan Hankins is ranked 78th, Monroe right-handed pitcher Joel Zamudio is ranked 81st and infielder Kirk Hagge of Crescenta Valley is ranked 93rd.

Robert Garcia of Oxnard will make his professional debut in an eight-round featherweight bout against James Dean of Planada, Calif., Feb. 4 at the Oxnard Civic Auditorium.

Garcia, 9-0 with eight knockouts as an amateur, is coming off a second-round knockout of Hector Diaz of Puerto Penasco, Mexico, on Sunday night in Del Mar.

A pair of golfers with ties to the region pulled off a rare feat at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard on Monday when each recorded a hole in one on consecutive shots.

Pat Shanahan of Redondo Beach and Mark Munoz of Ventura, playing in the same threesome, aced the 146-yard par-three fifth hole on consecutive swings. Munoz, 36, is a maintenance worker at River Ridge. Shanahan, 30, is a Buena High graduate who played football at Utah.
