* Cal State L.A., Saturday Conservatory of Music. Group lessons, theory and several orchestras. One year of lessons a prerequisite. $42 for a 10-week session. Financial aid and some instruments available. (213) 343-4109.

* Cal State Northridge, Community Music School. Five youth orchestras for students 6-22. Students must have one year of private instruction and bring their own instruments. $40 to $125 per semester. (818) 885-3074. Also small-group instruction for beginning and intermediate levels. (818) 885-3180.

Independent Schools

* Colburn School of Performing Arts, 3131 S. Figueroa. After-school and Saturday instruction in full range of band and orchestral instruments. Chamber groups, jazz, guitar and string orchestra.
