SAN GABRIEL : Motorcycle Patrols Back on the Streets

January 20, 1994

After being phased out 22 years ago, motorcycle police returned to San Gabriel's city streets this month under a $375,000 grant from the National Highway Safety Program.

The two officers and a sergeant who began cruising city streets are part of an overall traffic safety program that includes educational lectures and sobriety checkpoints. The grant enabled the city to acquire a radar display trailer that flashes the speed of cars to motorists driving past and to obtain hand-held laser beam speed detectors to replace the older radar units.

Also under the grant, San Gabriel officers must increase the number of citations given motorists for hazardous driving, such as drunk driving or running red lights, Police Capt. Richard Arnold said.
