Robert Smith of Moorpark, the only amateur in the field, can pull a rare feat today.
Only three non-professionals in 36 years of pro bowling have won on the national Professional Bowlers Assn. tour.
Smith can become the fourth to pull it off in the nationally televised title roll-off of the $220,000 AC/Delco tournament at noon at Cal Bowl in Lakewood.
Smith, 20, the National Amateur champion who attended Royal High in Simi Valley, earned the No. 1 seeding with a 42-game total of 9,643.
Other finalists, in order of their seeding: Norm Duke, Oklahoma City, 9,567; Ken Muscato, Canandaigua, N.Y., 9,484; Justin Hromek, Andover, Kan., 9,436, and Steve Wilson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., 9,394.
Smith gained a berth in the PBA event by beating 60 others in a win-a-spot "sweeper" tournament last week.
And should he win, he is entitled to the $44,000 prize.
