Going for the Gold

January 27, 1994

San Clemente High School's population will soon appear a bit older, thanks to a three-month pilot program that will transport seniors from San Clemente Senior Center to volunteer at the school.

The Senior Gold Card Program, so named because volunteers from the senior center will be given a gold card for a complimentary school lunch on the days they are at school, is intended to increase intergenerational contacts and boost self-esteem of both the volunteers and students.

"We want very much for seniors to have the opportunity to become more engaged with the community in which they live and for students to benefit from . . . the expertise possessed by so many of our local seniors," said Kim Marshall, district coordinator of the program.

Volunteers will have the chance to tutor students, share stories about themselves, work in special interest areas, proctor tests, assist students in the library and counseling office and take part in other activities.
