Hollenbeck Salutes Two Fire Chiefs

Hollenbeck Youth Center's 14th annual Dodger Salute, held Feb. 9 at the Westin Bonaventure, named Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman and L.A. City Fire Chief Donald O. Manning Men of the Year for their dedication in helping Los Angeles residents through last fall's fires and the Northridge earthquake. The benefit, hosted by Hollenbeck Youth Center and Hollenbeck Police Business Council, was attended by 1,500 guests and netted $70,000 for youth programs.

Operation Immunization will receive $75,000 of the $100,000 raised at UniHealth America Foundation's Pinnacle Award gala Feb. 18 at the Century Plaza. The charity will use the money to immunize children in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The benefit honoring Tommy Tune also gave $15,000 in Tune's name to A Chorus Line of Care, a group of dancers who raise money for AIDS causes. The $10,000 balance will benefit UniHealth America foundation programs. Celebrity guests included Gene Kelly, Joel Grey, Nanette Fabray and Stephanie Zimbalist.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) benefited from the sale of a letter signed by novelist Margaret Mitchell. The sale on Feb. 5 at Nate's Autographs Los Angeles raised $725.

Gateways Beit T'Shuvah raised $50,000 at its "Night to Remember" gala Jan. 17 at the Century Plaza, hosted by humorist Dave Barry. Proceeds will benefit the Gateways halfway house for Jewish men and women leaving the prison system or recovering from compulsive or addictive disorders.
