Iseth Cowan scored a game-high 27 points as Butte beat Cypress, 79-54, in the first round of the women's basketball State tournament Thursday at Solano College in Suisun City.

The loss ended the season for Cypress (24-10), which was making its second appearance in the State tournament. Butte is 30-3.

Sara Works, a freshman forward from Savanna High, scored 17 points for Cypress. Works was the co-most valuable player in the Orange Empire Conference.

Jody Caruso, with 11 points, was the only other Cypress player in double figures. Works and Tamika Harold had nine rebounds each.

"We were up here to win, not just happy to be here," Cypress Coach Kevin Kiernan said. "One of our goals was to become one of the top teams in Southern California. Appearing in the final eight proves that."
