LAGUNA NIGUEL : City Seeks Views on Skateboard Park

March 07, 1994|RICHARD CORE

If you're a kid, ride a skateboard and have opinions, the Parks and Recreation Commission wants to hear from you.

The commission is considering whether to build a skateboard park and is inviting sidewalk surfers to air their views March 14 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the City Council chambers at 27821 La Paz Road.

"We've got a couple of locations that we're thinking about (for the park), but we want to talk to the kids and see what their expectations are," said parks and recreation director Kerry Bartelt.

The locations the commission is considering are in Crown Valley Community Park. "That seems like the most viable place right now," Bartelt said.

Bartelt said she has looked at other cities' skateboard parks and particularly liked a Huntington Beach design with its concrete bowls and ramps. Most cities that have built skateboard parks require users to wear safety gear such as kneepads, gloves and helmets. The cities also tell youngsters they are responsible for their own safety.

"We really need to find out what the kids expect or want and see if that comes close to what we're able to do," Bartelt said.
