PREP BASKETBALL / GIRLS' ROUNDUP : Peninsula Goes on Tear to Rout Crenshaw in State

Mimi McKinney scored 32 points Tuesday to lead Peninsula High to a 73-55 victory over Crenshaw in the first round of the CIF Southern Regional tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Peninsula (25-4) will play Fresno Clovis West, an 85-49 winner over Santa Ana Mater Dei in the semifinals on Thursday at a site to be determined.

Crenshaw, which won the City Section 4-A championship, finished 22-6.

Ventura Buena 39, San Diego Vista 37--Buena trailed, 37-36, with 3 minutes 27 seconds to play and tied the score with 2:39 left on a free throw by Michelle Giordano, who then made the winning layup with 1:31 left in a Division I game at Vista.

Vista (20-8) failed to score a basket in the final 13:32 and missed its last 18 shots, including a three-pointer from the top of the key with one second to play.

DeAngela Minter, who will team with Giordano at Arizona next fall, took the shot, the last of her 15 consecutive misses.

Buena (25-2) was cold as well, making two of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and four of 16 overall.

San Diego Mission Bay 59, Hemet 39--Center Adia Barnes scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Mission Bay (28-2) to a Division II victory over Hemet (21-7) at Mission Bay.

Woodbridge 71, Bakersfield East 41--Center Angela Burgess scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds in leading Woodbridge to a Division II victory over Bakersfield East at Woodbridge.

Burgess scored 12 points in the first half as Woodbridge led at halftime, 45-14.

Moneeke Bowden led Bakersfield East with 17 points.

Woodbridge improved to 30-0 and Bakersfield East finished 17-9.

Alemany 63, Escondido 53--Kathy Reith, a seldom-used Alemany forward filling in for foul-plagued starter Zevette Mitchell, scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter to spark a comeback victory for Alemany (29-0) over Escondido (26-5) in a Division II game at Burbank Bell-Jeff High.

Brea-Olinda 75, San Diego Scripps Ranch 43--Nicole Erickson scored 20 points to lead Brea-Olinda (30-0) in a Division III game at Brea-Olinda.

Alissa Murphy led all scorers with 27 points for Scripps Ranch (20-6).

St. Bernard 77, Sierra 34--Olympia Scott scored 26 points, had 21 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to lead St. Bernard (26-5) to a Division IV victory over Tollhouse Sierra (20-9) at St. Bernard.

Santa Ynez 80, Corcoran 63--Kirsten Pedersen scored 26 points and Sherry Bjorklund scored 21 to lead Santa Ynez (25-5) to a Division IV victory at Corcoran (25-1).
