VENICE : Bus Line to Close Due to Low Ridership

March 27, 1994

An experimental bus line in Venice will be canceled June 26 due to low ridership, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced.

The cancellation of Line 34 along Rose Avenue will reduce the MTA's operating budget deficit by about $268,000 annually, spokesman Steve Chesser said Thursday. The line had been instituted in response to customer requests.

But after one year, the line has averaged only 100 boardings per day, a fourth of the anticipated 400. Instead of Line 34, MTA patrons can use Line 33 on Main Street, or Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines' Line 3, boarding on Lincoln Boulevard.
