A light plane crashed Tuesday night in a patch of rugged chaparral on Santa Catalina Island, killing at least one occupant and igniting a quarter-acre brush fire that was visible for miles, authorities said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Burt Lyon said the crash was reported at 7:11 p.m. in the Big Springs area of the island about 3 1/2 miles west of the Catalina-Avalon Airport. A woman's body was found in the Cessna's wreckage two hours later as paramedics searched for survivors.
