After Reconstructive Elbow Surgery, Kempton Gets Medical Redshirt Year

May 15, 1994

Cal State Northridge right-hander Keven Kempton has been granted a medical redshirt year and might give his senior season another shot in 1995.

Kempton, who was 10-4 with an earned-run average of 3.99 as a junior in 1993, was sidelined with an elbow injury after only four games this spring.

After struggling to an 0-3 start with an ERA of 7.71, Kempton had major reconstructive surgery on his right elbow. He was expected to lead the Matador pitching staff, which has been decimated by injuries.

The nature of the surgery, however, doesn't guarantee that Kempton will be ready in 1995.

Kempton, 24, is expected to take at least 12 months to recover.

Agoura High outfielder Kevin Sass will play at Fresno State next season as an invited walk-on, his mother, Ursula, said Saturday.

Sass, who played shortstop as a junior, finished the season with five home runs, a .354 average, 23 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

Ryle Lynch-Cole, who compiled a 160-69 record as coach of the Channel Islands High girls' basketball team from 1985-1993, has been named the head coach of the girls' team at Oxnard.

Lynch-Cole, who is not an Oxnard faculty member, guided Channel Islands to three Marmonte League titles, but did not coach last season.
