PASADENA : Firm Gets Award for Seismic Work on Bridge

May 26, 1994

The San Francisco engineering firm De Leuw, Cather & Co. was named an honor award winner in the American Consulting Engineers Council's annual Engineering Excellence Award competition. The company was recognized for its seismic rehabilitation work on the Colorado Street bridge over the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena.

The 1,468-foot bridge, an early example of 20th-Century reinforced concrete arch bridge construction, was closed to traffic in 1989 because of safety concerns. Because the bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places, the company had to preserve its historic integrity while using seismically resistant new materials to strengthen it. The company was recently honored, along with other award honorees, at the council's annual convention in Orlando, Fla.
