Woman's $40,000 Goes Out With the Garbage

May 30, 1994| Associated Press

SPOKANE, Wash. — When Joel Forrester pulled the lever on his garbage truck's trash compactor last week, an envelope burst open and $100 bills started floating out.

After calling his boss, Forrester and other trash haulers began picking through the garbage, coming up with more and more money.

Then a customer called and told them she had stashed $40,000 in a wastebasket that was disposed of by a relative helping her clean house.

"We recovered $39,980," Dewey Strauss, president of Valley Garbage Service said Friday. The customer, whose name was not made public, got the money back. Forrester got no reward for turning in the money.
