WORLD CUP USA '94 ROUND OF 16 : Spotlight : NEW BELGIAN POSITION: OFFENSIVE GOALKEEPER

July 03, 1994|CHRIS DUFRESNE

Belgium came as close to the last-ditch hockey strategy of pulling its goalie as you will ever see in soccer when its goalkeeper, Michel Preud'homme, left the net to join his team's comeback cause late in the second half of Saturday's game against Germany.

With Belgium trailing, 3-2, Preud'homme sprinted downfield to take part in the offense at the German end. He nearly made head contact with a corner kick delivered by teammate Josip Weber.

"I had nothing to lose," Preud'homme said. "If I can help the team tie the game, 3-3, then we can go to extra time. That was my intention."
